One name that has kept circulating with a potential move to Celtic is Dundee United’s midfield prodigy Stuart Armstrong. Back in January, Celtic were said to be keeping a close eye on numerous players at Dundee United including the likes of Ryan Gauld, Gary Mackay-Steven, John Souttar and ex Celtic player Andrew Robertson. Of all these names though, Stuart Armstrong has been the only one continuously mentioned. Dundee United have got a great group of players at the moment with some of the brightest prospects on show, so its no surprise that Celtic are sniffing around.
Armstrong is a bit like Scott Brown, he is a powerhouse in the centre of midfield and he doesn’t shy away from putting in a tackle. He likes to get stuck in and loves the ball at his feet, pinging passes left, right and centre. Armstrong is still very young at the age of 22 so he is still learning and developing as a player. He is seen as one of the most important players at Dundee United, something which is a very difficult tag to achieve, giving the talented youngsters on show at Tannadice.
With the players at Dundee United, Armstrong is only going to get better and will continue to develop his all round game. The crop of players at United are still extremely young, so they will only keep learning and the youth set-up is an integral part of their development. Real Madrid were rumoured to be interested in signing Ryan Gauld, so it just goes to show how good these players are.
Celtic themselves have got a fantastic youth academy set-up and also have an exciting bunch of players threatening to break into the first team. We have already seen Liam Henderson, Darnell Fisher and Filip Twardzik play in the first team and this is something that will keep happening. One player who has been on fantastic form over the season has been Denny Johnstone. He is a striker and he has scored a lot of important goals. His contract expires this season though and although Celtic have offered him a new deal, it is thought that he is keen to move to Dundee United instead. While Celtic would be losing one of their prospects, you can’t help but feel that Dundee United would suit him better. United could offer him first team football and this could really spur him on.
While Jackie McNamara is reluctant to sell any of his players, you would like to think that Celtic could tempt United into selling. It will certainly be a testing transfer window for United, with clubs down South looking on with interest. A bid of £2 million plus the services of Denny Johnstone could force the hand of United. Johnstone’s contract expires soon though, so Celtic might not even be able to add him into the deal, he would simply just sign for United.
As I said though, there is no official source confirming that this deal could be on the cards, but it is a rumour that keeps on cropping up. Neil Lennon has said he would like to sign players before the Champions League qualifiers, so we might see deals progressing over the next month or so.
